Good News, Planet Earth! - September 2020

Solar panels that pull clean drinking water out of thin air? Trucks and planes that run on hydrogen and produce nothing but water? Greenhouse gases being transformed into biodegradable plastic? This all sounds like magic to me!

Seriously though, this is what’s possible when people work together to solve global problems. There was a time when many would have doubted that any of this was possible. If this feels like news of the future, remember that as time moves on, this will become news of a distant past.

I believe that our environmental damage can be reversed by innovations that now seem impossible. They’ll allow us to live sustainably and help life on Earth thrive. I have faith in future generations; the kids of today who were born into a world that clearly needs saving, and the kids of tomorrow who will learn from every generation before them.

News like this gives me hope that we’re moving in a good direction. No matter how you feel about the present moment, remember that the most challenging moments in life lead to the most growth, as individuals, as a species, and as a community of Earthlings.

Solar-Powered Panels Pull Water Out of the Air For Navajo Families Who Have None

By Good News Network – Sep 10, 2020

  • Zero Mass Water’s Source hydropanels use solar energy to pull water vapor from the atmosphere and bring clean, drinkable water through its faucets

  • Navajo Power, Public Benefit Corporation, and Zero Mass Water are working together to bring this revolutionary air-to-water technology to thousands of Navajo households that will have access to clean drinking water for the first time

  • Each hyrdopanel connects to a cloud-based network so that performance and quality can be monitored

  • Source hydropanels are well-established, supplying clean drinking water to tens of thousands in 45 countries around the world

  • Each panel lasts 15 years, produces 2-5 liters of water each day, and holds 30 liters of water

  • These panels can be deployed virtually anywhere, and some communities now receive all of their drinking water from nearby “water farms” with a large collection of these panels

This Good News is a great example of an innovation that will allow for an unprecedented amount of health and advancement all over the world by providing accessible, clean drinking water to many for the first time in an entirely sustainable way.

World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Plane Lifts Off On Maiden Zero-Emissions Flight

By Good News Network – Sep 27, 2020

  • ZeroAvia completed the world’s first hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered flight of a commercial-grade aircraft, reaching an altitude of 1,000 feet

  • This achievement is an important first step towards moving from fossil fuels to zero-emission hydrogen to fuel commercial flights

  • ZeroAvia is now planning a 250-mile flight with zero emissions with its six-seat plane by the end of 2020

This Good News shows that we now have access to the needed technologies to soon allow every plane in our skies to run on clean energy with zero-emissions.

New Biodegradable Carbon-Negative Straws and Forks Are Made From Greenhouse Gases–and They Dissolve in the Sea

By Andy Corbley – Sep 29, 2020

Image : Newlight/Restore Foodware

  • Newlight uses ocean microorganisms to turn methane into physical material, making straws and cutlery that are carbon-negative, ocean-degradable, and dishwasher-safe

  • When returned to the ocean, this foodware dissolves and provides food for the life in the ocean that produces the material

  • This revolutionary technology turns greenhouse gas into this “Air Carbon” material, similarly to how plants transform greenhouse gases through photosynthesis

  • Air Carbon material is also being used by Covalent to make sunglasses and leather-like wallets, phone and laptop protectors

This Good News is a good representation of our future circular economy, meaning that nothing is wasted in this product’s life cycle since its disposal helps create the product again, making it entirely sustainable.

Zero-Emission Trucks Set To Make New Zealand A World Leader In Hydrogen Energy

By Andy Corbley – Sep 15, 2020

  • Hiringa, a New Zealand hydrogen energy company, signed an agreement with Hyzon Motors, a U.S. manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells, allowing hydrogen-powered electric vehicles (HPEVs) to start hauling freight in 2022

  • The fuel cells use hydrogen mixed with oxygen from the atmosphere to power the trucks, so the only emission that leaves the trucks is water

  • These long-distance trucks are capable of traveling 310 miles on one tank

  • Between 2020 and 2026, Hiringa plans to release 1,500 different HPEVs in varying sizes

  • Hiringa is working with regional, national, and native governments and is on course to service nearly every trucking route in both islands of New Zealand with refueling stations

This Good News is a great example of different industries working together to lead the way in an exciting venture of new vehicles and fueling stations that will allow an entire nation to start breaking their dependence on fossil fuels with an innovative, hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions national supply chain, setting an example for other nations to follow.

Kites of Renewable Energy Generate Wind Power by Flying Through the Air

By Good News Network – Sep 12, 2020

  • German startup kiteKRAFT built and successfully flew a small flying wind turbine that’s half the cost and uses 10x less material than traditional wind-power options

  • The kite uses smart algorithms and sensors to find the best location for efficiently generating wind-power in mid-air by flying in a figure-8 motion and stretching to reach stronger winds at higher altitudes

  • Logistics, installations, and inspections are all much simpler than they are for standard wind-turbines, and they’re much less visible, which is a benefit to those who don’t want big structures blocking a landscape

  • This success came only one year after the company’s foundation, and they’re looking into installing a bird protection system early on

  • KiteKRAFT owners and inspectors can use an app to access the kite remotely, view the current states, see through the onboard cameras, and give commands to the kite

  • The kite logs flight and performance data and sends this info to kiteKRAFT servers for analysis by engineers, enhancing future reliability and allowing this flying computer to improve exponentially in performance and reliability over time

This Good News shows the beginnings of a new wind-power technology that’s much more advanced while also being more cost efficient and using much less material than standard wind-power, providing exciting potential for the improvement of energy to sustainably power our future world.
